“The progress of Evolution from President Washington to President Grant was alone evidence enough to upset Darwin.”
Henry Brooks Adams (1838 – 1918)
from “The Education of Henry Adams”
Henry Brooks Adams was an American historian and a descendant of the 2nd U.S. President John Adams, and the 6th U. S. President John Quincy Adams.
Republican Ulysses Grant, 1822-1885, was elected President in 1869 and re-elected in 1872. His administration was plagued by executive scandals during his 2nd term, including his response to the economic panic of 1873. He was ineffective in halting the long depression which contributed to the Democrats winning the House majority in 1874.
And then along came Trump.
